This picture is taken from there. I’ve always found it quite a difficult thing to photograph trying to work out where the salmon will leap and then hoping you will get this fish in focus. I definitely recommend using a remote release so you can watch the water!</image:caption>

<image:caption>During a trip to London with Lizzie Shephard (we both had image in the BWPA) we visited the Heal’s department store to see and photograph the staircase designed by Cecil Brewer.

It’s quite a wild structure! I decided to use a very wide angle lens and position myself so the that staircase became similar to a seashell.

I stacked the image so that I had sharpness all of the way through the image.</image:caption>

One of my favourite views is this which is the ceiling of the old chapter house. The room was built around 1280 and is simply magnificent. This image is taken with a super wide lens and pointed straight up. Care taken to try and line the lens up as carefully as possible.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is one of those images that took the most amount of effort and fieldcraft! I'd just come back from a trip to Bulgaria and my dad told me 'I've got you a present' which was, he had found a little owl nest ,which was just a 20 min walk from my house!

When I went to look for myself I realised that you had to lie behind an old gate and make no noise. If you waited long enough one or both chicks would come and look around. Once I got this shot of both chicks looking towards the gate I actually left the site alone.

The following year the are had been fenced off so sheep could be put in the area so I've no idea if the nest was active again after that year.</image:caption>

	      	<image:title>Greater Spotted Woodpecker Feeding Young</image:title>
<image:caption>Whilst out walking with my dad we heard a noise which i thought must have been young woodpeckers inside a tree. Sire enough while standing distant we saw one of the adults fly in with food.

A few days later i went back with what i thought was the right equipment to photograph the feeding but quickly realised if I was anywhere near the nest the birds would not appear. Obviously i realised very quickly this was bad! So quickly backed off and decided on a different approach. The following day i went back with a long lens, a tripod and a remote release. This way I could set up and then retreat a further 50 meters and wait with binoculars. It's quite amazing how often these birds come in with beaks full of insects and caterpillars. IMHO one of the great wildlife events to photograph in the UK - if done respectfully!</image:caption>

<image:caption>During a session at Skipwith Common looking for macro subjects I saw some movement on a brick wall (part of the bomb dumps) when I look down a bit closer I was amazed to see a spider hunting wasp dragging a spider up the wall.

This was my first time observing a ‘spider hunting wasp’ actually predating a spider. This parasitic wasp hunts for spiders. When it finds a spider it paralyses the spider with a sting. Then it will transport the spider to a burrow and lay an egg inside the spider. The egg will hatch into a wasp larvae which will then eat the spider from the inside, while the spider is still alive. Eventually the larvae will metamorphose into the final wasp stage and hatch out of the spider. It was 2014 when I saw this and then again I saw the same behaviour in 2025 in exactly the same spot!</image:caption>

The otters got out of the water seeing that we were on the shore but they where completely relaxed. They played, cuddled and cleaned each other before falling asleep. After about an hour me and the dog had to sneak away! A beautiful experience!</image:caption>

This image was featured in New Scientist some time around 2014 and I took the image while Drax was still a coal power station hence the title.

I took this image before I knew anything about astrology photography and with hindsight I should have used a slower shutter speed as in this image I have star trails, but you learn as you go on!</image:caption>

It was only in 2013 (that I saw) that there was a fantastic poppy field allowing for shots like this!

It is only recently I’ve learned there’s ‘Ferrybridge Henge’ a Neolithic site site also in this field area!</image:caption>

<image:caption>This day I'd found a ball of tiny Cross Spider (Araneus diadematus) spiderlings on a brick wall which is part of bomb dump at Skipwith Common. They are quite a fascinating thing to see and photograph on their own but as I was observing them I saw a male zebra jumping spider (Salticus scenicus) come into the scene. The much larger zebra spider then started to predate and eat the tiny spiderlings! A wild thing to see and I’ve been visiting this same site for since 2010 and not seen it since.

A note that as I took this image many years ago it was before I used stacking as a technique and I was using flash which you can see reflected in the jumping spiders eyes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>May not be the most aesthetically pleasing image in my gallery but a fairly unique one. This day I was at Leighton Moss photographing birds when i saw a mallard and a large rat getting quite close. Then whack the mallard hit the rat with its beak and flicked it up into the air! Not something you see every day!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Although an old image it is one of my favourites as it shows the wing structure of the red kite so well. I was driving back home from Adel Dam and was close to Harewood when I saw about 15 red kites flying in the air. When I pulled the car over I saw that a farmer was plowing a field and the kites were feasting on freshly exposed worms. A really interesting behaviour to see!</image:caption>

Photographing it was interesting but on the way back to the car the weather had picked up and there were huge waves bashing against the sea wall near Seaham lighthouse. This was much more interesting to photograph!</image:caption>

Really worth checking out. This old bridge was built in 1767 and it feels very old when you are there.

A visit here can be combined with some over good landscape views or taken as part of a longer circular walk which also encompasses some neolithic stones.</image:caption>

What is a little sad about this image is that the ash tree no longer looks like this and now has been significantly impacted by ash tree die back.

This image was in BBC wildlife magazine back in 2012.</image:caption>

This was just before I was using the stacking technique in macro photography so is a single image. Another big difference with my current photography is the use of flash and therefor a darker background to my modern images.

This image was highly commended in the British Wildlife Photography Awards and therefore was exhibited in the Mall Galleries just down the road from Buckingham Palace.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bitterns are a wonderful bird who's numbers are thankfully increasing again after nearly being extinct in the UK. But still they are rarely seen and even though I spend a lot of time at places that I hear the male booming. I generally only get one or two sightings a year. So I was delighted when I managed to get a really good view of this bird.</image:caption>

We had hiked up in mist and about -8C but then as we walked up the valley it got warmer then at about 800m we got above the mist and the veiw back down the valley was all the way to the mountains in Norway. As soon as it started to get dark the auroa was visable. One of those unforgetable magic nights!</image:caption>

There's a type of robber fly which mimics a bee and I was going to travel to Scotland this Summer to try and find and photograph it. I've been wanting to see one of these for years. On the 2nd morning in Bulgaria just at the end of the morning session I saw a smallish looking fly roosting on the seed head of a tall grass. When I got a bit closer I couldn't belive it when it was a robber fly bumble bee mimic! Amamzing how excited one can get on spotting a fly!</image:caption>

<image:caption>I love green tiger beetles (Cicindela campestris) , they are awesome insects and fearsome preadtors of ants. But the can be a real challange to photograph as they are incredibly skittish and generally will not let you get close. I more often see them as they are flying away from. But this one I found at Skipwith Common in late March which is early for a green tiger beetle and I'm making an assumption but I think it may have only just emerged as it was very reluctant to move allowing me to take several stacked images of it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This image was taken on New Years Eve. Which in Abisko is well into the polar night ie you don't see then sun. But you do often get these fantastic skies which look like a sunrise. Here I composed these icicles around Lapporten in the distance and tried to get the red colours refracting in the ice. </image:caption>

We had a deep cold spell which did the usual winter freeze followed by a warm spell that you should not get 200km north of the Arctic Circle in December but sadly is becoming more common. The warm spell had caused meltwater to gently sculpt this ice creating shaping this beautiful icicle.

The air bubbles within the ice remind me almost of a spine.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On an early morning dog walk, I found this fly on a seed head. I didn't recognise it but did see the photographic potential as it was a very unusual looking fly. I did a side profile and a head-on shot. This was the head-on version. The fly reminded me of an apache helicopter!

When I got home a friend identified it as a Thick Headed Fly (Conopidae). These are parasitic flies that lay their eggs in bees (actually in flight). They actually fire a torpedo-like egg into the bee. The larvae then grow inside the bee eating it from the inside!

Amazing insects!</image:caption>

<image:caption>There was a little spot I knew near Ferrybridge power station where you could get a complete reflection of the power station in the canal. One very still and cold November evening I went to the spot and because of the unusual conditions, the steam coming out of the cooling towers was acting rather odd and making this amazing reflection.

I used a 30-second exposure to try and capture some of the movement of the steam.

The cooling towers have been dismantled recently so this image is now gone!</image:caption>

I followed and he pointed out this snake hanging from the foliage with a frog in its mouth. I think it's a vine snake but not sure.

One of the great things with doing a new website it is giving me a chance to got through my back catalog and look at this differently! Back in 2012 I never used to do stacking but when i looked back through the folder I found 3 frames that would work in a stack so here it is. </image:caption>

<image:caption>One morning a friend of mine called and let me know that he had some female wolf spiders in his garden that spiderlings on their backs. You do see female spiders pushing their egg sacs around. After the egg hatches the baby spiders then jump on to her back and stay there for a few days. It was another thing I've always wanted to see so I went straight round.

I wanted to stack the images to increase the depth of field and had to do that handheld as the spiders were so skittish. I had to move into position let the spider run away and then wait for it to come back into position slowly. Then I could grab the shots required for the stack!</image:caption>

<image:title>Five times magnification portrait of a marbled white butterfly</image:title>
<image:caption>When I first got into macro photography I was blown away by the high-level magnification shots I was seeing on the web. I was somewhat disappointed when I realized most of the photographs where taken in a studio on dead subjects. I set my self a goal to photograph the subjects alive and well in their own environment ie out where they live but to deliver similar type results.

I think this was the first time I properly managed it.

This a marbled white butterfly photographed at Brockadale Nature Reserve. It was taken at 5 times magnification is about 50 images stacked using the Canon 5DS camera. So it was a huge file by the time I had finished. Hopefully, you can see a lot of the detail on this version!

The water on the eye is either a dewdrop or rain but the insects I photograph are never sprayed.</image:caption>

It was a full moon hence it looking so bright. People are often under the misconception that you can't see the aurora in a full moon. You can, it does mean the aurora appears a little less bright, but it does mean you see the colours more clearly. Here my clients wondered what I was doing as I rushed about the frozen lake to line up the aurora with the top of the lavvu. Hence the name of the photograph!</image:caption>

<image:caption>I found this unique ice formation on the side of lake Torneträsk during a cold period in the month of February. This was following a warm period which had increased the humidity of the air then, because of the cold temperatures that followed that water had to freeze on this icicle inside a small ice cave creating this spiky ice! Never seen anything else quite like it. I tried to compose the image so that very little of the ice spikes overlapped the rest of the image. This was a single shot with the Canon 5DS a 100mm macro lens and a Benro Mach 3 tripod.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Disclaimer, although this is one of my favourite images that I've taken, this was not taken in the wild. It was taken in the Polar Park near Narvik in Norway. They used to have a pair of Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) there where you could go into the enclosure. As the foxes came to investigate and one fox hung back I had the idea for this photograph. I deliberately pushed the exposure of the image so the snow overexposed and the foxes sort melted a little into the background.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of the things I love about the region around Abisko is the uniqueness of the images which can be found. 200km above the arctic circle the weather and conditions mean that every day can be different. In this unique image lake Torneträsk had previously frozen and then a big storm had smashed all of the lake ice into small glass-like fragments. The storm had created a bank of the ice fragments nearly 2m high and other ice fragments in the waves. I used a long exposure to create movement in the waves but not too long of an exposure.

The classic view of Lapporten (Čuonjávággi) is in the background.</image:caption>

So I headed down there one very cold night with a friend and I climbed into the ice cave and where my friend was stood I saw this composition I instantly loved. I had to get them to stay very still as I took a number of photographs so that I could have both the ice, the photographer and the aurora in focus.

It is notoriously dangerous and there have been a number of fatalities at this site. On this day I visited the area with friend and fellow photographer Lizzie Shephard and I thought I saw a different view which may work. Using a longer focal length than would be normally used I photographed The Strid from a low angle.

Because of the long focal length this gave an extremely shallow depth of field so this actually the combination of three photographs which I have stacked together to increase the depth of field.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This was a fantastic wildlife experience. I had been on the Isle of Mull in Scotland looking for otters (Lutrinae). I found this family of otters on the first day on the island and photographed them many times over the ten days I was there. I think what helped was that I never scared them so they became quite relaxed as long as I stayed away from them. This was one of my favourite moments when the otters apppeared in front of me as they ahd jumped out of the sea.</image:caption>

	      	<image:title>Two Little Owl Fledglings on a Tombstone</image:title>
<image:caption>This is an older image but still absolutely one of my favourites. A friend had tipped me off about a family of little owls living in a graveyard in South Yorkshire. So I headed to the area. My firend had advised me that as long as I sat in the car the owls where quite active. I first spotted the fledgling owls at the bottom of the graveyard and they slowley worked there way towards the car. All of a sudden both owls landed together on a tombstone and I just had a few seconds to get this photography. It wasn't untill I got home that I saw the little owls had landed on a young childs tombstone. I still get goose bumps when i think about that recollection! </image:caption>

<image:caption>I tyook a trip to Poland in 2019 with the aim of photographing a number of different wildlife species. One was the European tree frog.I found this frog and it was in the same tree branch and never moved. This one time though it moved in to this perfect position to be photographed. Just after I took the picture it then went back laying back on the branch! </image:caption>
