Landscape and Nature in Lapland

Abisko Landscape and Nature Tour

This is a brand new tour taking in the autumnal beauty of Abisko in Lapland. Autumn is a very beautiful time to visit Abisko. The lakes and the rivers are yet to freeze although there is likely to be some frost in the morning and the colours of the trees and the ground plants can be fantastic.

The tour will be led by Oliver Wright (in conjunction Lights over Lapland ) who has extensive knowledge of the local area and we will be supported with an experienced mountain guide for some of the more extensive hikes (guides and support from Activities In Abisko).

There will be two days of longer hikes of up to 15 km with hills and rocky terrain so people interested will need to take this into consideration.

The tour will focus on landscape and nature photography both of the open mountain vistas but also into more detail such as macro shots of nature. Of course, if the forecast looks good for aurora photography this can be built into the schedule too.

The tour will be for 5 nights starting on the 26th of September, all transport to and from Kiruna airport is provided, accommodation is provided (with a kitchen) in Abikso, the trip will be mostly self-catering but with some meals provided

This tour is aimed at photographers of any level and of reasonable fitness levels who want to explore a little bit further into the wilderness of Abisko and improve their photography.

Refelctions 2

This is a very quiet time to visit Abisko and once we leave the village we are unlikely to see any other people let alone photographers!

Suggested itinerary (which could be changed due to best conditions based on the experience and knowledge of the guide)

26th of September

It looks like the flights are arriving late at this time of year so it will be a late pick up from Kiruna if there is aurora on route to Abisko may involve a few stops on route. Transfer takes 1 hour 20 mins.

27th of September

This day will be spent doing shorter trips to a number of local landscape areas of outstanding beauty (eg Abisko canyon, Torneham, the river delta, the world famous Kunglseden, local spectacular waterfalls, various lake and mountain views).

In the evening a gorgeous local style meal will be provided and we will also travel out on a floating sauna onto lake Torneträsk under the night's sky.

Autumn Colours

28th of September

The plan will be to hike to majestic Trollsjön with the support of an experienced mountain guide. Trollsjön is Swedens purest water lake and an area of outstanding beauty. Its a 5km hike in with a gain of altitude of 400m and then the reverse back out. The whole Kärkevagge valley is a scene to behold as the glacier here covered the valley in giant rocks. Allthough this is a reasonable hike we will be stopping at numerous spots for photography and probably have around 2 hours around the lake. We will provide lunch on this date also.

29th of September

Another day spent doing shorter trips to a number of local landscape areas of outstanding beauty (eg Abisko canyon, Torneham, the river delta, the world famous Kunglseden, local spectacular waterfalls, various lake and mountain views). Note we will be going to different locations compared to the 27th.

View from Trollsjön

30th of September

A longer hike either towards Lapporten (the gate to Lapland) or another destination depending on the group and the conditions but will be another full day of hiking in beautiful surroundings again supported with an experienced mountain guide. Again with many stops for photography. We will provide lunch on this date also.

An evening outdoor meal will provided to finish the trip in a suitable outdoor environment for the conditions (ie we may use one of our partners teepees).

Autumn Flower

1st of October

Depart for Kiruna airport

On the days of shorter hikes we may also do sunrise and or sunset shoots if the weather conditions look correct so may have early or late finishes (sunrise is approx 6:40am and sunset is 18:30pm). Also we may do some more class room type sessions on theory if the group or members of the group want to go into more detail on photography subjects. The key will be to be flexible in making sure that you get the absolute most of the location and your time with with the experienced guides.

The tour as well as getting you to beautiful places that not many people have photographed is to improve your photography.

Price is approximately £989 (as the price in Swedish is 11500 SEK) per person.
