Macro Photography Workshop in Yorkshire 24-25th of July

I really excited to start doing macro photography workshops in Yorkshire. I've been planning on setting these up for some time and it was always about finding the right location which allowed a mix of classroom space and proximity to good macro photography sites. 

Doing the workshops from Wheldrake means we can be using a brand new classroom with 1st rate facilities and also be able to walk off site into a lush environment with high potential for macro subjects and 15 mins to one of my favourite sites of all time.

The workshop is aimed at people with some photography skills who have a camera and a macro lens.

The workshop will be over two days and will be a balance of learning new skills and techniques  indoors and then practising these skills and learning field craft at some great macro sites outdoors.

I'll be covering all the techniques and skills I've developed over the last 15 years.

Day 1

The group will meet at lunch time on 24/7/2026 and we will be based initially inside to cover;

• Introductions
• Basics of macro photography
• What makes a good macro photograph
• Different types of macro photography
• How to do it
• We will spread some time outside practising some techniques
• Cover different macro techniques in more detail
• Wrap up for the day around 17:00

Day 2

Meet about 15 mins before dawn (variable time but could be as early as 4:00am) at the building then explore the local area between the building and Wheldrake Ings; here you will be able to practise what you learnt on day one, but, in the field. As the group is purposely small I can observe, help, give pointers and we work together to get you results and learnings.

After the sun is well up and we see the change in roosting insects we will head back inside. After a break and refreshments we can take any learnings from the morning and work on them. This can also be a good opportunity to work through editing images but with images from that morning.

Then we will head to another site with a totally different habitat (heathland therefore different species) and time of day. We can then work through the different techniques used, different species and different approaches. Again small group so I can spend time observing and feeding back.

We will then head back to the base  and inside to wrap up the session in the early afternoon to allow people to travel home.

During this time of the year we could find various species and the morning session will be mostly trying to find dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies hopefully with some morning dew, of course weather dependant. This time of year a number of different species have emerged and can be present. During the day session we could find various species of jumping spiders, robberflies, some butterflies and common lizards. If we are lucky some early ruby tailed wasps, again, weather dependant.

This course will be about getting the skills and techniques for this type of photography and then taking these home to practise and hone. The course will also cover the ethical considerations of macro photography and our impact on these sensitive areas.

The cost of the workshop will be £175 and will be limited to 3 people

• The costs will cover all tuition over the two days
• All travel once arrived at the site and within the day (but not the travel before or after the days start/finish)
• A macro photography zoom call after the event at the clients convince to discuss what has been learnt and help feedback on progress
• Teas and coffees while at the site

The cost doesn’t cover accommodation, food or individual insurance during the two days.
